Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India has taken a decisive step toward clean mobility with the rollout of the PM E-Drive scheme—a landmark initiative aimed at building a nationwide electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

In a high-level coordination meeting chaired by Union Minister for Heavy Industries, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, senior officials from the Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Road Transport and Highways, and Heavy Industries convened to accelerate the implementation of this transformative program.

With a robust financial outlay of INR 2,000 crores, the PM E-Drive scheme will support the deployment of approximately 72,000 public EV charging stations across India. These stations will be strategically installed along 50 national highway corridors and key high-traffic hubs such as metro cities, toll plazas, railway stations, airports, fuel outlets, and state highways, ensuring widespread access to charging infrastructure for EV users.

According to Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, this scheme is more than just infrastructure. It would lay the foundation for energy independence and green growth. Further, he mentioned that PM E-Drive will provide every Indian with access to clean, convenient, and affordable mobility, while positioning India as a global leader in sustainable transport.

To streamline user experience and manage nationwide deployment, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is being considered as the nodal agency for the scheme. BHEL’s responsibilities would include demand aggregation and the development of a comprehensive digital super app—a one-stop platform offering real-time slot booking, payment integration, charger availability, and national rollout tracking.

BHEL will also coordinate closely with state governments and relevant ministries to evaluate proposals and oversee on-ground implementation. Minister Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy emphasized the power of cross-sectoral collaboration in driving clean energy goals.

The successful execution of the PM E-Drive scheme is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions from the transport sector, boost Make in India manufacturing for EV infrastructure, and lay the groundwork for India’s net-zero mobility vision.
